CRUCIFIXION AND FOUR SAINTS. Miniature cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM [Bologna, ca. 1330] Miniature 310 x 55 mm. At head in rectangular compartment the Crucifixion, the Virgin and St. John seated below the Cross on a rocky ground sloping in perspective, against a blue background; below within golden quatrefoil compartments John the Evangelist, John the Baptist holding a representation of the Holy Lamb, Peter Martyr in Dominican habit holding a book and a palm leaf, St. Peter holding a key. (A lower portion is cut away), blue and pink ground, part of seven lines of text and music on red 4-line staves at side and on verso. Made for a Dominican convent, possibly San Giovanni Evangelista. Conti, La Miniatura Bolognese no. 213 illustrates another miniature possibly by the same artist in the Bibliothèque Nationale lat. 3039. The same artist may may also have been the illustrator of an Apocalypse in the Fondazione Cini, Venice, cf.
