Norman and Son for George Redway, 1884. 8° (286 x 187mm). Mounted etched portrait frontispiece on india by and after F.W. Pailthorpe, one plate and illustrations after Cruikshank. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 2 autograph letters signed by Cruikshank, together 5 pages, 12 sheets bearing pen and ink or pencil drawings by Cruikshank, a printed leaf with manuscript additions in his hand, a signed, etched portrait of Thackeray by T. Johnson, and 169 etched, engraved, aquatint and other plates, the majority by and after Cruikshank, 25 hand-coloured, some proofs, many inlaid to size. Contemporary crushed green morocco gilt by Tout, the covers with ornate foliate borders, the spine gilt in 6 compartments and titled in 2, the others elaborately gilt, gilt turn ins, patterned silk doublures and endleaves, top edge gilt (a few light scuff marks). LARGE-PAPER COPY, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 12 LEAVES BEARING DRAWINGS BY CRUIKSHANK AND NUMEROUS PRINTS. The leaves bearing original drawings comprise: a signed pen and ink sketch of a house (165 x 106mm); a signed page with 2 pencil sketches of horses and 2 of children's heads, and a pen and ink grotesque (183 x 130mm); 'a very clear sketch of John Sheringham Esq' executed in pen and ink (182 x 112mm); 4 caricature faces in pen and ink (114 x 111mm); a pen and ink sketch of a young man and the grim reaper captioned 'Time and tide wait for no man' (100 x 131mm); 3 pen and ink sketches of a figure carrying a board titled 'Grand Music Hall. Gin Beer Tobacco', a profile, and a seated figure (90 x 146mm); 2 pen and ink sketches of mountains (100 x 125mm); a pencil drawings of a horse-drawn carriage and a young woman (111 x 176mm); pencil sketches of horse's heads and helmets (120 x 100mm); a pen and ink drawing of a haughty figure (122 x 112mm); a pencil drawing of a fleeing horse (110 x 175mm); pencil sketches of a woman wearing a yashmak and a woman wearing a bonnet (132 x 100mm).
