CRUIKSHANK, George, illustrator. Complete set of India proofs for Grimm's German Popular Stories , London: C. Baldwin, 1823-1826. 22 etched plates (with engraving) on 11 sheets of India paper, each mounted on heavy laid paper (some occasional pale foxing), mounts measure approximately 220 x 280 mm. Loose as issued, in modern cloth folding case. COMPLETE SET OF PROOFS ON UNCUT INDIA SHEETS. This set with the engraved title-page to vol. 1 in second state, with the umlaut "" in Mrchen. Among Cruikshank's best work, the "etchings are seen at their best in the suites on special paper which were issued with a few copies of volume 1" (Ray). (Apparently unaware of the set of proofs for the plates in vol. 2, present here.) VERY RARE. According to ABPC, the only other undivided india proof set to come to auction since 1975 was the Pforzheimer-Schfer set (sale, Sotheby's London 14 Dec. 1988, lot 5; and Sotheby's New York 1 Nov. 1995, lot 72; respectively). Cohn apparently had an undivided set of India proofs for vol. 1 only; Bruton and Douglas complete sets, but with proof sheets divided. Cohn 369 note; Ray English 112 note (no. XXIV on his list of "One Hundred Outstanding Illustrated Books").
