While Twombly was studying at the Art Students League in New York in 1950, he took the advice of his instructor, Robert Rauschenberg and spent two summers and a winter at Black Mountain College, near Asheville, North Carolina. There, working alongside Robert Motherwell Franz Kline and Ben Shahn he produced this print to serve as a cover for the poem "The Song of the Border Guard" by Robert Duncan. It was published by Nick Cernovich, better known for his work in underground theater, particularly with composer John Cage
