Median 2° (310 x 216mm). Collation: [1-12 1 0 13 1 2 14-17 1 0 18 1 2 ] (1/1r blank, 1/1v tabula, 1/3r text, 18/10v colophon, 18/11-12 blank). 183 leaves (of 184, without final blank). 38 lines. Type: 1:110R 2 , 110 Greek (fo. 17/8v). Opening leaf illuminated by a north-Italian artist, initial in gold with white-vine decoration extending to inner margin, coat-of-arms in lower margin, 2- to 7-line initials in blue or red, contemporary MS foliation. Pinholes visible in many corners. (Light spotting at beginning and end, light dampstain at fore-margins, more noticeable at beginning and end.) 18th-century Italian vellum, flat spine gilt, green leather label, green edges. Provenance : armorial -- contemporary marginal annotations. Second edition of the works of St. Cyprian, 'the first great Latin writer among the Christians' ( Catholic Ency. ), reprinting Sweynheym and Pannartz's Rome edition of the same year. His writings were praised by Prudentius, Jerome and Lactantius and remained popular into the Renaissance. Among spurious works (included here) is the fantastical tale of the transfer of the head of St. John the Baptist to Angers at the behest of King Pepin.
