Czerminski M., “Wyprawa na Patmos, Efez i Krete. Krakowie”, 1904. First and only edition. In 8vo 22x15cm. Contemporary blindstamped binding, slightly rubbed. Inside clean. Complete, half title with authors dedication, title, [8] 247p. and all the seventy (70) illustrations. Overall a very good copy. Marcin Czerminski (18601931), a Polish Catholic traveled twice in the Levant, in 1899 and 1903. He had with him a photographic machine, so he had the opportunity to include unique captures in his travel account. In total the book contains 66, mostly unknown, photographs (8 for Patmos, 25 for Anatolia and 33 for Crete) and 4 maps. The first trip to Samos, Patmos and Anatolia has been made in 1899 and the second to Crete in 1903. He stayed a long time in Patmos, he described accurately the island and after via Samos he visited Ephessos ruins and several other places around. He spent time in the ancient Byzantine Monastery of Panagia Kapouli in Anatolia, including unique photos of it. In 1903 had travelled extensively in Crete, providing detailed information for the then Independent Crete, as well as unique photos of early excavations in Crete and the Cretan life in the early 20th century. The travel account had been published privately in Krakow in 1904 and only one copy survived in all public institutions worldwide (Warsaw Public Library). An EXTREMELY RARE unknown travel for the Levant, unique photographic material.
