Card has printed caption, Black Horse and [missing portion], and imprint verso, Barry Photographer, Bismarck and Standing Rock, DT, within a decorative border. Ca 1880s. An interesting field view, unlike Barry’s studio portraits. In 1874, Son of the Star (1825-1881) came to Washington, DC, where it was agreed that the Arikara would scout for the US military in return for protection from the Sioux. Upon White Shield’s death in 1878 he became chief of the tribe. Provenance: John Painter Collection of American Indian & Western Photography Condition: Good, minor losses on mount margins and caption partially gone.
