Lot of 4 silver gelatin photographs, including two 5 x 7 in. portraits of Rain-in-the-Face, one in which he holds an 1873 Winchester rifle; and 7 x 9.25 in. composite image of Lakota Chiefs Rain-in-the-Face, Sitting Bull, and Chief Gall. D.F. Barry: Superior, WI, ca 1890s-early 1900s. Each with D.F. Barry Blindstamp, and portrait of Rain-in-the-Face with Winchester includes Barry's Superior, WI applied paper label on verso. Silver gelatin photograph, 4 x 4 in., on 5.5 x 5.5 in. mount. On June 24, 1876, at Custer's Battlefield. Frank Purcell: Billings, MT, June 1897. Title and description printed on mount verso, referencing the massacre at Little Bighorn and describing the photograph, which is comprised of two exposures: "The first was made at the battlefield where Custer fell and the second exposure was made by accident to catch 'Bloody Knife' as he appeared in war dance costume; he with over 200 other Crow and Cheyenne Indians were holding a war dance in the valley just below the battlefield." The description continues, "Was it mere chance or did the camera see more clearly than eyes of man?" Condition: Barry photographs in very good condition overall. View of Rain-in-the-Face with Winchester is whited out along lower margin. Each with light corner and edge wear. Purcell photograph shows even toning. Mount with few pinholes in lower margin, some corner and edge wear, soiling/smudging.
