New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. 4to. Illustrated by Joseph Schindelman. Original brick red cloth, upper cover stamped in blind with gilt spine title, top edge stained purple, in dust jacket. Condition: some minor creasing and rubbing at tail of jacket spine panel, tiny closed tear at top edge of jacket rear panel, faint spotting to jacket verso, a little tanning along top edge of front panel, but still much better overall than usually found. first edition , first issue of this children’s classic. With the six line colophon on last page. The basis for two film versions, including the 1971 cult film starring Gene Wilder as Wonka and the recent remake by Tim Burton featuring Johnny Depp as the eccentric owner of the fantastic candy plant. The present is a true first, the American edition oddly preceding the English by three years.
