Beschreibung:

DANTE Alighieri (1265-1321). Le terze rime . Venice: Aldus Manutius August 1502. Aldine 8 o (156 x 94 mm). 244 leaves. Italic type 1:80. Woodcut dolphin and anchor device (Fletcher no. 2) on verso of last leaf. Spaces for initials with guide letters. This copy with the usual setting of quires a-c and with "Alaghieri" on title verso uncorrected. (Dampstaining to first quire, some staining and foxing throughout, old crease-marks to a few pages.) Modern rust morocco gilt by Bennett of New York; slipcase. Provenance : 18th or 19th-century initials on title J. F. ?Q; Harold Greenhill (bookplate). FIRST ALDINE EDITION and the first pocket-sized edition of the Divine Comedy . The Aldine anchor device was added to the last leaf as an afterthought during the press run; thus some copies are without it. Other in-press corrections provide a number of variants; for instance, the mispelling on the section title on a1v is corrected in a few copies, and quires a-c are known in a variant type-setting. Adams D-83; Ahmanson-Murphy 47a; Renouard 34.5.
