DAPPER, Olfert (d.1690). Description de l'Afrique... Traduit de Flamand. Amsterdam: Wolfgang, Waeesberge, Boom and van Someren, 1686. 2° (360 x 220mm). Engraved frontispiece, folding general map, 12 double-page maps, 1 folding plate, 29 double-page plates. (Occasional light spotting, slight browning to first and last few leaves.) Contemporary mottled calf gilt, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one (joints repaired). Provenance : early inscripton "...vente de Malesherbes..". FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH of "an important early work on Africa in general, which was translated into several European languages. The original edition was published in Amsterdam in 1668... There is an interesting view of Table Bay and Mountain, with a sketch of the fort.. The illustrations include many views of African ports and towns, and several maps and plans are very curious" (Mendelssohn I, p.414). Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes' 'Bibliotheca Lamoniana' was first offered for sale in Paris in 1791. Thomas Payne bought the library en bloc before the sale and issued his own catalogue in 1793. It is not clear whether the present work was part of his library, but if it was, it is unusual in that most of his books were bound to a formula which included flat spines with the shelf mark blocked in the lowest compartment. Mendelssohn I, p.413.
