DARWIN, CHARLES, editor . The Zoology of the Voyage of H. M. S. Beagle, under the Command of Captain Fitzroy, R. N., during the years 1832 to 1836. London: Smith, Elder and Co. [1838-] 1839-1843. 5 parts in 3 vols., 4to, 312 x 245 mm. (12 1/4 x 9 3/4 in.), quarter brown morocco, spines gilt, (part 5 bound in before part 4), corners and board edges rubbed, head of spine of Reptiles vol. chipped, 1/2-inch tear in gutter, occasional foxing to uncolored plates in parts 1 and 5 . FIRST EDITION, half-titles, 163 mainly lithographed plates, 2 folding, comprising 82 colored and 78 uncolored lithographs and 3 uncolored engravings. Contents : Part I, Richard Owen, Fossil Mammalia , 32 plates (2 folding); Part II, George R. Waterhouse, Mammalia , 35 plates (32 colored); Part III, John Gould [and G. R. Gray], Birds , 50 colored plates; Part IV, Leonard Jenyns, Fish , 29 plates; Part V, Thomas Bell Reptiles , 20 plates. Part III, Birds...with a Notice of their Habits and Ranges , was only partly written by Gould, who supplied the descriptions of the species, but upon his departure for Australia in the spring of 1838 he left an unfinished manuscript, which was completed by George Robert Gray of the British Museum, with Darwin's assistance. The unsigned lithographs are by John and Elizabeth Gould Of all Gould's works, this volume is thought to be the only one in which all the lithographs are entirely the work of Mr. and Mrs. Gould" (Jackson, p. 45). (12 x 9 1/2 in.), half green morocco, original part wrappers to numbers 1-4 bound in at end, plus three leaves publisher's ads and slip "Notice to the Binder" slip; extremities rubbed, spine darkened , two of the front wrappers SIGNED BY RICHARD OWEN. DARWIN AS EDITOR: "I send you a proof title-page in place of the temporary title, now affixed to no. I of Fossil Mammalia. Please to observe that it is the general title to whole work, & matches the general one to Mammalia (which was given in last no. of birds) I hope you will approve of it. I have put your honorary titles only briefly in this general title... I do not at all know, whether I have put your honorary letters properly. I only just put them down to fill up what appeared to be the proper space in the page... I hope soon to receive proofs of the remaining sheets. I fear after all the publication of the number at the proper time is beyond hope...P.S. Since I wrote this, Mr. Stewart, the Printer has called, & he tells me you have not sent any list of plates or contents. I must [??] for the uniformity of the work you will have the kindness to do so, even if they be brief ones". Darwin letters of this early date rarely appear on the market.
