(8 5/8 x 5 1/2in.), contemporary green half morocco gilt, g.e., joints and corners worn, both maps browned and with slight offsetting and single small tears (c. 2-inch), ink library stamp on title-page. FIRST EDITION, Second Issue and the First Separate Edition (the first issue forms vol. 3 of The narrative of the voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle , 1839). PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Darwin on half-title "Dr. Richardson from the Author", 2 engraved folding maps, 3 text diagrams. Freeman 11. "[Darwin's] first published book is undoubtedly the most often read and stands second only to On the origin of species as the most often printed. It is an important travel book in its own right and its relation to the background of his evolutionary ideas has often been stressed."--Freeman. Provenance : 1. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, presented by Darwin to Sir John Richardson (1787-1865), arctic explorer and naturalist (inscription as above, and bookplate). In 1819 Richardson was appointed surgeon and naturalist to Sir John Franklin's polar expedition and between 1825 and 1827, while accompanying Franklin's second voyage of discovery, he made an important journey of his own eastwards from Mackenzie Bay into the interior of Northern Canada. On pp. 619-620 of Journal of Researches , in the "Addenda", Darwin cites Richardson's observations and findings concerning the action of glaciers on rock in Arctic regions. 2. Torquay Society of Natural History, library stamp on title-page and page of Library Laws pasted to verso of front free endpaper.
