Das Kreüterbüch oder Herbarius . Strassburg: Balthasar Beck, 8 August 1528. 2° (286 x 191mm). Title with woodcut border depicting the preparation of medicinal plants and Galen and Asclepius. 390 woodcut illustrations [Nissen count], woodcut tailpieces and initials, all of the illustrations and most of the tailpieces and initials coloured by a contemporary hand. Gothic type, 2 columns. (Variable spotting and browning, some light offsetting and dampstaining, paper flaw in B2, title and final leaf E6 with neat repairs, final (index) quire lightly wormed.) Early 19th-century English half calf gilt over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-pieces in 2, and lettered directly, others tooled in blind, marbled edges (a little rubbed, skilfully rebacked retaining original spine); modern cloth box. Provenance : Charles Hurt junior, Wirksworth, Derbyshire, 26 July 1825 (patron of Joseph Wright of Derby, 1782-1852, inscription noting the purchase of the book from the bookseller Edward Baylis, Manchester, for £1.10 s ; by descent to his son:) -- Philip Anthony Hurt (b. 1821, author of The Guards' Cemeteries, St. Étienne, Bayonne , London and Derby: 1878, bookplate). A RARE HERBAL, COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. A revised and augmented German edition of the Hortus sanitatis , prefaced by a medical index. Each entry gives the plant's name in Latin, Greek and Arabic, describes its characteristics and medical properties, and cites references to the species in earlier authorities such as Dioscorides, Pliny, Hippocrates, and Avicenna.
