Signed and titled on label on the reverse Oil on panel, 55.6 x 69.9 cm N.B.: The work offered here depicts Adriaen Brouwer instructing Joos van Craesbeeck in painting, as stated by Col on the label on the reverse. Van Craesbeeck worked as apprentice at a baker in the Antwerp castle. In 1633 he met Brouwer who was incarcerated in the castle for a short period, and who afterwards became his mentor. A comparable work by Ferdinand de Braekeleer dating from 1824 is in the collection of the Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten of Belgium, and may have inspired Col to paint this work.
