David Johnson American, 1827-1908 Landscape (White Mansion in the Distance), 1863 Signed with the artist's initials D.J. and dated 1863 (ll) Oil on canvas 18 x 28 inches Provenance: Private collection, New York, 1941-93 By descent in the family, New York In 1851 David Johnson first visited the White Mountains of New Hampshire, an area that he would continue to paint through the 1870s. He is known to have spent some time in Tamworth, a town in these mountains, in 1863, the year of this work. The semi-cultivated landscape and the white mansion in the distance both suggest that Tamworth is the location of this view. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art
Glue relined. Scattered craquelure throughout. Frame rubbing, with corresponding inpaint, especially along the lower register and the left edge. Scattered light touches of inpaint in the sky. There is a 1 inch vertical repaired tear at the lower center among the trees. There is no further restoration visible under UV light.
