David Tindle RA born 29th April, 1932 We are delighted and privileged to have a small collection of David Tindle's work for sale. He is a senior Royal Academician and has a very important history of exhibitions during his long career. David was born in Huddersfield and trained at Coventry School of Art and Byam Shaw School of Art. He was appointed visiting tutor at the Royal College of Art in 1972 until 1983 when he became Ruskin Master of Drawing at Oxford University 1985 to1987. Tindle was elected Royal Academician in 1979 and Fellow of the Royal College of Art in 1981. Tindle's first solo exhibition was at the Piccadilly Gallery in 1954 and was followed by many solo exhibitions in the UK and Europe, such as 57 Gallery Edinburgh, and very suitably for us, the Metropole Gallery, Folkestone in 1963 and 1965. He showed in Bolognia, Hamburg and Milan. He was regularly exhibited by Fisher Fine Art, London from 1985, but then moved to the Redfern Gallery, London from 1994. His works have been part of major group exhibitions, such as the 'International Biennale of Realistic Art' in Bruges, 'British Painting' in the Hayward Gallery, 1974, 'Twenty Five Years of British Painting' at the Royal Academy, 'Portrait of the Artist' Tate Gallery 1989 and 'The Discerning Eye' at the Mall Galleries 1997. Throughout his career Tindle has been friends with many leading artists such as Lucien Freud and Bacon and was considered their equal in the art world. Bacon once told David that, ''I don't like my own work and we artists are just all meat on the barrow.'' How true today. In the last decade or so he has been largely forgotten through inertia by his gallery and living out of touch in Italy. It is good to see that he has found the confidence and belief to stride forwards again in his eighties. Tindle has always shown the most exquisite skills of draftsmanship in his work, which nearly always has an enigmatic meaning to the composition, a coat hanging off a hook, a man standing in a doorway, an apple on a plate - all of which are in unexpected places. His paintings seldom depict the exotic, but minutely reflect subtle differences, somewhat like the great Italian painter, Morandi. Both Tindle and Morandi have wonderful powers of observation. He has remained true to his values all his life. Tindle's paintings deserve a good hard look, there is always much to see beyond the obvious. He is one of the very few artists who has not compromised his art for the market place. David Tindle has enjoyed a late flourish in his paintings. He has given 15 paintings to his good friend, who has asked us to sell the paintings for him in our auction on 9th May. We are delighted to receive these modest sized paintings by such a distinguished British painter. Modest sized paintings are favoured these days, many collectors do not have a great deal of space left in their houses and flats.
