DE BRY, Johann Theodor - Grotesque Alphabet, after De Bry. [France, mid-18 t h century]. 24 pen-and-ink-and-watercolor drawings of De Bry's grotesque alphabet, in mirror image, perhaps traced from the engravings and then colored, nine letters are dated 1620. 120 x 160 mm. On Auvergne paper by Sauvade 1742 or later (Churchill p. 58 and 60). Mounted into an oblong 17 t h -century French album (180 x 235 mm), bound in limp vellum gilt, fillet border, wreath in center of sides (front cover stained). Provenance : Hippolyte Destailleur (remains of his bookplate); Charles Edouard Mewes (bookplate); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books 1972. A late but pretty manuscript version of De Bry's famous grotesque alphabet. It has until now been dated 1620, but the paper carries the tariff date of 1742 and is likely to be even somewhat later.
