Title: De occulta philosophia libri tres Author: Agrippa, Henricus Cornelius Place: [Cologne] Publisher: [Johannes Soter] Date: July, 1533 Description: [12], CCCLXII pp. aa6, a-q6, r8, s-z6. A-G6. Occasional woodcut figures and illustrations in the text; woodcut initials; woodcut portrait on title-page. (folio)11¾x7¼, old calf, rebacked with modern calf, original spine strip laid on. First Complete Edition. Important work on the occult, first published in 1531, considered the most famous work on "white" magic; this is the first complete edition. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim (1486-1535), was variously a diplomat, theologian, doctor of both law and medicine, soldier, and occult philosopher, required to defend himself against charges of being a witch, and enduring stints in prison form indebtedness. The present copy of the work has bound in before the title-page an engraved title for another work, "Cosmographei," which is mounted on a backing leaf with chips. There is extensive contemporary underlining to the text, and much ink marginalia and markings. Lacking the final blank. Bookplate of Ralph Sympsun, Esq. Lot Amendments Condition: Much of title-page missing, 4½" wide strip remaining, but containing the portrait and much of the title, mounted on backing leaf, facsimile of entire title-page supplied; occasional soiling and other wear within, a number of repairs, good overall, quite scarce. Item number: 145969
