DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. In Congress, July 4, 1776. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America. When in the Course of Human Events... Boston: Published at Stationer's Hall, n.d. [1840-1850].
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. In Congress, July 4, 1776. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America. When in the Course of Human Events... Boston: Published at Stationer's Hall, n.d. [1840-1850]. Folio broadside (28 x 22¼ in.), printed on stout wove paper, backed, some light discoloring along central vertical fold, slight creasing to lower edges. In a fine period frame. A RARE BOSTON EDITION. A finely executed, decorative edition of the Declaration with the Signers' signature. The design is influenced by that engraved by Benjamin Owen Tyler in 1818, using a variety of ornamental types to emphasize certain key words and phrases in the Declaration's text. The facsimile signatures may also be derived from Tyler's model, or from Sanderson's Biography of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. The elaborate pictorial borders include circular woodcuts of the 13 states (similar to the 1819 Binns engraving); at the top are large portraits of Hancock and Jefferson; along the bottom are woodcuts depicting "The Battle of Lexington" and "The Destruction of the Tea," plus a large portrait of Benjamin Franklin J. Bidwell, "American History in Image and Text," in Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, vol.98, part 2 (October 1988), no.18 (citing one copy in an institutional collection).
