St. Petersburg: Academie des Sciences, 1738. 4 o (237 x 181 mm). 13 engraved folding plates. (Small wormtrack near gutter.) Contemporary panelled mottled calf gilt (some rubbing). Provenance : C.F. Degen (signature on title, a few notes in margins). FIRST EDITION, giving the first account of Delisle's "universal thermometer" and containing his brother's observations on the Aurora Borealis in Russia. Delisle was invited to St. Petersburg in 1721 by Peter the Great. He went in 1725 and remained there for 22 years. He wrote a number of textbooks there, including the present. Lalande 407.
