(A little light browning, minor worming in top fore-corners at the beginning.) Contemporary calf, spine gilt, Dutch printed endpapers (rebacked and joints neatly repaired). Provenance : M.J. Chavignac (near-contemporary signature on title).

Chavignac (near-contemporary signature on title). First edition, published posthumously and dedicated to Queen Cristina of Sweden. The book consists of 119 letters to and from Descartes, several to Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia (1618-1680), a few to Queen Cristina, Claude Clerselier (1614-1684), Pierre Chanut (1601-1662), and various others with an interest in science and other topics. The second volume appeared in 1659 and the third in 1667. Willems 800.
