(Design at Home with Mark Hill - Pure Evil Gallery, London, 7th April 2019) Joy Clucas (1931-2006) British 'Maelstrom', an abstract machine embroidery of a Modernist-style opening rose, seen from above, in tones of orange, pink, red and brown threads, with embroidered Joy Clucas 'signature' within the design in the bottom right corner, the back with handwritten title 'Joy Clucas Maelstrom', in original period frame, frame 100cm wide, 72.5cm high Joy Clucas was an important pioneer of artistic machine embroidery, and a founder member of the '62 Group of Textile Artists' set up in 1962 to promote machine embroidery. She studied at art colleges in Southampton, Brighton and Bromley and also taught. She held a temporary position at the Crafts Centre of Great Britain, and took part in many exhibitions across Europe and won awards. Examples of her work are held in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
