DESROCHES, Nicolas. Dictionaire des Termes Propres de Marine . Paris: A. Auroy, 1687. Dedication copy of the first comprehensive French dictionary on shipping, with the plates of flags coloured by a contemporary hand. Desroches is listed as Lieutenant de Vaisseau in 1671 and captain in 1693, but not much else is known about him. Polak 2593. Octavo (183 x 116mm). 21 engraved plates, of which 17 with contemporary hand-colouring (8 plates wholly remargined at the time of binding, text leaves Z5 and Z6 bound in wrong order). Contemporary red morocco gilt, armorial stamps within triple fillet border with foliate cornerpieces, gilt spine and turn-ins. Provenance : Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, Comte de Toulouse (son of Louis XIV and Mme de Montespan, 1678-1737; binding, a version of Olivier 2607 fer 6 on the sides; then by descent to his son:) – Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, Duke of Penthièvre (1725-1793; inscription on front free endpaper 'Ce volume a appartenu au duc de Penthièvre dont les armoires sont la couverture') – 'Ce livre appartient au comte de [rayé] Vergy garde marine au départment de Toulon. A Toulon le 10 mars 1743' (inscription on front free endpaper repeated at head of title).
