DEVONSHIRE, Elizabeth, Duchess of (1758-1824). -- HORACE (65-8 B.C.). Satyrarum Libri I. Satyra V. Rome: de Romanis, 1816. Large 2° (413 x 280mm). Latin title, 3 leaves of the Latin verse, diviosnal Italian title, 3 leaves of Italian translation [by M. Moljanoi]. Engraved portrait of Elizabeth, dowager Duchess of Devonshire, two original vignette pencil drawings on the two titles, the second signed Gabrielli and dated from Rome 1817, and 17 FINE ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS by the Duchess of Devonshire, Bassi, Pomardi, Kaiserman and others. Contemporary Italian gold-tooled red morocco, covers with wide decorative border surrounding the tooled and painted arms of Cardinal Consalvi, flat spine in seven compartments, turn-ins with gilt black morocco, light-blue silk liners, inlays, gilt edges (the arms flaked). Provenance : Cardinal Ercole Consalvi (1757-1824; presentation inscription retraced in ink from Elizabeth, dowager duchess of Devonshire, binding). UNIQUE COPY. Elizabeth Cavendish, widow of William, 5th duke of Devonshire, according to Brunet, financed the production of this book. There were two editions (both with engraved plates and dated 1816), the first limited to 150 copies (of which 60 were distributed by the Duchess to friends and the surplus destroyed) and the second edition limited to 200 copies. The Italian translation for both editions is attibuted to Molajoni.This presentation copy of one of these edition has original drawings in the place of the engraved illustrations. A third, quarto, edition was published by Bodoni in Parma in 1818 with a new translation by the recipient of the present copy, the Cardinal Ercole Consalvi. Lady Elizabeth Hervey was the daughter of the 4th Earl of Bristol. Widow of the Irish M.P. John Thomas Foster she formed part of a notorious ménage-à-trois with Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire and her husband, William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire. The Duke eventually married Lady Elizabeth Foster in 1809, two years after the death of Georgiana in 1807, but died shortly afterwards in 1811. Elizabeth, dowager Duchess of Devonshire, lived on until 1824. Ercole Consalvi (1757-1824) was created Cardinal in 1800, but is known principally for his political acumen and in particular for directing the reorganisation of the Papal States and their finances. He also supported numerous artistic and scientific endeavours. The original illustrations are as follows: 1 Portrait of Horace, copied from an antique medallion, vignette on title, pencil, 80mm. diameter, unsigned. 2 Gaspare GABRIELLI Italianate landscape, vignette on second title, pencil, 100 x 130mm. approx., inscribed 'Gabrielli Roma 1817' 3 BASSI.
