American, fourth quarter 19th century. Constructed of 2" square pieces of cotton calicos and other prints graphically arranged in a diamond pattern surrounding a square center medallion. The center medallion is constructed from the commemorative kerchief printed for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Wide floral print border and binding; gray and blue floral print back. Machine pieced, hand quilted in line quilting; 94" x 94". A nearly identical quilt with President Garfield in the center is in the permanent collection of the American Folk Art Museum in New York and has been published often. Condition: Remains crisp and bright; fabric loop tacked to back for hanging.
