DIBBLE, Sheldon. History of the Sandwich Islands . Lahainaluna: Press of the Mission Seminary, 1843. 12 o (182 x 112 mm). Engraved folding chart (lacking the four plates depicting scenes of the islands, scattered light foxing, otherwise in good condition). Original decorated cloth (spine lightly faded, covers slightly soiled). FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ACCOUNT OF THE SANDWICH ISLANDS PUBLISHED LOCALLY. Dibble was a missionary who went to Hawaii in 1828; his history includes an account of Cook's visit and death. Copies with the four engravings are very rare, and some copies lack the appendix which is here present. Provenance : Evangelical Mission, Basel, 19th century library stamp on title. Sabin 19992 ("Of great scarcity. The book and engravings appear to be of home manufacture"); See Mitchell Library Cook 2475, 2479 and 2508; Holmes 89.
