DICKENS, CHARLES. Autograph fragment from the original manuscript of Oliver Twist (1838), comprising two lines in ink on a narrow oblong strip, 24 x 183mm. 15/16 x 7 3/8in.), laid down on another sheet with a Dickens ANS and an identifying card (see below). TWO LINES OF THE MANUSCRIPT OF "OLIVER TWIST" The two-line fragment, apparently cut from the manuscript by the author himself, reads: "She's bid having a plate of boiled beef id the bar, replied Darney." Two words, "having" and "id" are substitutions for words lined out by Dickens, showing that altering Darney's pronunciation of "in" to "id" was a quick inspiration. The ms. fragment is accompanied by an Autograph note signed ("Charles Dickens", with paraph") to an unnamed correspondent, Gad's Hill Place, Higham by Rochester, Kent, 9 August 1858. 1 page, 8vo, on Dicken's pale blue stationery with printed heading , reading: "Faithfully yours Charles Dickens With Mr. Charles Dickens's compliments." An ink note in a contemporary hand on a small card identifies the fragment as "2 lines ° the original MS of Oliver Twist given C.E. Lester by C. Boz."
