DICKENS, Charles, Director and Actor]. BULWER LYTTON, Edward. Playbill for the Amateur Company of the Guild of Literature & Art production of Not So Bad as We Seem: or, Many Sides to a Character... The Whole Produced Under the Direction of Mr. Charles Dickens . London: [W.S. Johnson for] Devonshire House, 16 May 1851. Broadside (501 x 250 mm). Printed in red and black. (Separated along central horizontal fold, some chips at edges.) Loose in modern red cloth portfolio. Provenance : Kenyon Starling. Bulwer Lytton's Not So Bad as We Seem was directed by Dickens and he played the role of Lord Wilmot, "a young man at the head of the mode more than a century ago." Douglas Jerrold, John Forster, Mark Lemon, F.W. Topham, Charles Knight and Wilkie Collins also performed in the play and are listed in the dramatis personae on this playbill. This was the first work performed by the Guild of Literature and Art (see lot 146 for the dedication copy of Bleak House inscribed to Mark Lemon, and a further note on the Fund). Yale/Gimbel H802. Tipped-in to modern red cloth portfolio. The second performance of Not So Bad as We Seem , but the probable first performance of the farce Mr. Nightingale's Diary . In it Dickens is listed as playing the role of Mr. Gabblewig. Also performing were Mark Lemon and Wilkie Collins. Not in Yale/Gimbel. (2)
