Dickens, Charles. DOCUMENT SIGNED, AN INDENTURE ESTABLISHING A COMPREHENSIVE AGREEMENT OF COPYRIGHT between Dickens, Edward Chapman William Bradbury and Frederick Mullett Evans, and Frederic Ouvry, incorporating a list of Dickens's books divided into two schedules and establishing the division of copyright of these two groups of works, signed and sealed by all parties, with a later addendum signed by Bradbury and Evans, 2 pages, vellum (595 x 730mm.), 2 February 1858 Dickens consolidates his copyright with his two publishers ahead of the publication of the Library Edition of his works. This indenture establishes that the copyright to the works in the first schedule belongs equally to Dickens and Chapman, that the copyright of those in the second schedule is divided three-quarters to Dickens and one-quarter to Bradbury and Evans, and that no price alterations can be made to any work without Dickens's permission. Bringing together these copyrights made possible the handsome uniform Dickens Library Edition, with volumes published by both houses, that began in spring 1858. The later addendum records the winding-up of Dickens's relationship with Bradbury and Evans and transfer of stock to Chapman and Hall ("...Received June 13th 1862 of Messrs Chapman & Hall the sum of three Thousand two hundred and fifty pounds for our One Quarter share of Mr Dickens's Works as specified ... and for the stock, stereotype plates and steel plates of the same...")
