PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the recto of the first blank: "Chas E. Fitch, March 1871. From the author", and again on the recto of the second blank: "I owe to Charles Dickens twenty-five of the most delightful and most instructive evenings of my life. Kate Field. Washington. Jan 1. 1894." Described by the New York Times in her obituary as: "The famed and versatile Litterateur, Actress, Dramatic Critic, Author, Newspaper Woman, Lecturer, and Garb Authority", Kate Field was the most prominent woman journalist in the U.S. of her day and one of the first women to contribute to the Atlantic Monthly . She was close friend to the Brownings, the Trollopes and particularly Walter Savage Landor, and the model for the character of Henrietta Stackpole in Henry James' novel A Portrait of a Lady .
