Contemporary cloth, spine gilt, speckled edges (some minor rubbing, some light fading to spine and front cover). Provenance : Kenyon Starling (bookplate). Second American edition. The first American edition was published by Winchester in 1843 in Supplement to the New World . Thought by some to be a piracy, the Winchester edition was discontinued after 12 monthly parts, presumably due to lack of interest from the American public. Harper issued their edition originally in 7 monthly parts and continued to pay royalties to Dickens, who was infuriated by unauthorized editions of his works being published in America. While it is possible that this copy was bound from the original parts, Yale/Gimbel lists a Harper issue in one volume, although their copy is disbound.
