London: Chapman and Hall 1839. 8vo, presentation binding (?) of greenish-black hard-grained morocco gilt, sides with central gilt design of urn, floral interlaces and thistle, blind rules at edges, rounded spine with gilt-lettered title within shaped compartment of floral and leaf designs in gilt, dated "London 1839" at bottom, board edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, g.e., yellow silk marker bound in, very light wear at top of spine and some edges, small abrasion on rear cover, half-title and publisher's inserted catalogue at end not preserved. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, second state of text (with "sister" on p. 123, line 17, and "letter" on p. 160, six lines up), First State of frontispiece portrait of Dickens engraved by Finden after Maclise ( a little foxed ), 39 etched plates by "Phiz" (second state of first four plates and of plate facing p. 248, plates spotted ), PRESENTATION TO HIS CLOSE FRIEND AND FELLOW NOVELIST WILLIAM HARRISON AINSWORTH, inscribed by the author at top of title-page: "William Harrison Aisnworth from his friend Charles Dickens May 1841." Eckel, p. 64; Smith 5; Sadleir 695; Wolff 1806. Charles Dickens first met William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882), seven years his senior, in 1834, and a close friendship developed. Ainsworth introduced Dickens to his publisher Joh Macrone, who issued the young author's first book, Sketches by "Boz ," in 1836, and brought him into his London literary circle. Along with John Forster, Dickens and Aisnworth formed the Cerberus Club, consisting only of themselves. In 1840, at Dickens's recommendation, Ainsworth succeeded him as editor of Bentley's Miscellany ; Ainsworth went on to edit his own periodical, Ainsworth's Magazine , from 1842-1853. In the course of his own literary career Ainsworth wrote 39 novels, mostly historical, and a number hugely popular. Provenance : Pencilled ownership signature of "A.P. White, 1904" on front flyleaf; Anonymous owner (sale, Swann Galleries, 21 October 1976, lot 74, to Maurice Inman, Inc.); Sold shortly after the auction to Bernard Quaritch, Ltd., and Lathrop C.
