Welsh naturalist Dillwyn was a porcelain manufacturer and Member of Parliament, who was elected to the Royal Society in 1804 for his work on conchology and botany. His collection of shells, the "small cabinet of shells" mentioned in the preface to this work, is now part of the collection of the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen.
