DIOSCORIDES, PEDACIUS, De medicinali materia libri sex, Ioanne Ruellio... interprete... Per Gualtherum H. Ryff... aedita. (Part II: LONITZER, ADAM. In Dioscoridae Anazarbei de Re Medica libros, a Virgilio Marcello uersos, Scholia noua.) Frankfurt and Marburg: Christian Egenolff, (August 1543). Folio, 283 x 193 mm., old calf, worn through to boards in a few places, some slight marginal worming to title and preliminaries, some pale dampstains (mostly marginal) . Second illustrated edition, 2 parts in one, woodcut printer's device on titles and at end of part 1), part 2 title with woodcut head-piece, 595 text woodcuts, a few woodcut initials. Egenolff's first edition of Dioscorides is often called the first illustrated edition, but it was almost certainly preceded by Johann Schott's Strassburg edition, also published in 1543 and illustrated with the Weiditz cuts used by Schott for his editions of Brunfels. Most of the woodcuts in Egenolff's more copiously illustrated edition were previously used in his editions of Rösslin. These include about 200 cuts copied from Isingrin's first edition of Fuchs's De historia stirpium , which Fuchs roundly criticized in various publications, and a few of the reduced pirate copies of Weiditz's Brunfels cuts (or copies of copies, since the original Egenolff copies which appeared in the 1533 Rösslin were confiscated by Schott shortly thereafter). This is the first edition of Lonitzer's scholia to Dioscorides. Adams D-663; Nissen 496; Pritzel 2307. Provenance : Early marginal annotations and underlinings -- Dr. Louis Planchon, stamp on title and front free endpaper -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate.
