Document Signed ("Abraham Lincoln"), partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 p, folio, Washington, DC, August 3, 1861, appointing Thomas W. Harrison as United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, also signed by William H. Seward as Secretary of State, with Presidential wax seal, leaf creased, barely affecting Lincoln's signature, a few small stains, else fine. Lincoln appoints Thomas W. Harrison as U.S. District Attorney for the Western District of Virginia after that state had already seceded in April of that same year. A group of Virginia Union loyalists did form an alternative government, the Restored Government of Virginia, and on August 20, 1861 granted itself permission to form a new state. It was formally admitted into the Union in June of 1863 as West Virginia. Harrison likely served here during this unofficial interim. See illustration.
