Frost and Henry Holiday (Text block becoming loose in binding, title and frontispiece a bit browned.) Original gilt-stamped olive-green cloth edges gilt (some rubbing and light dust soiling). Provenance : William Wilcox (presentation inscription from the author, dated 7 Dec. 1883); W. Fitz-Gerald O'Shaughnessy (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY DODGSON TO HIS COUSIN AND GODSON on the half-title: "William Wilcox from his affte. Cousin the Author Dec.." On December 6th Dodgson received 12 copies of Rhyme? and Reason? "which I disposed of 11 the same day." The next day he notes "Sent off more than 40 more" (Diaries 8 [2004] p.68). Dodgson wrote a number of letters to Wilcox and his siblings, and corresponded regularly with his parents. He showed a great interest in the welfare of the Wilcox children, and payed for the education of William. After the death of her husband in 1896 Dodgson sent a regular stipend to the widow.
