Ordinary copies are bound in red cloth with the same gilt-decorations as here. Dodgson had variants such as these prepared for some of his presentation copies to his friends. On December 12, 1889 Dodgson notes in his diary: "Went to town for the day, to write in about 150 copies of Sylvie and Bruno, which will be published tomorrow" (Diaries 8 [2004] p. 495). James Wilkes (b. 1812) was a surgeon and commissioner in lunacy. Dodgson first consulted him in regards to his Aunt Lucy on April 5, 1880. Williams-Madan-Green-Crutch 217 and 250.
