Provenance : J. Wilkes (presentation inscription from the author, dated Dec. 27 1893). FIRST EDITIONS. PRESENTATION COPIES IN PRESENTATION BINDING, INSCRIBED BY DODGSON on the half-titles: "J. Wilkes with sincere regards from the Author, Dec. 12. 1889" and "J. Wilkes with sincere regards from the Author, Dec. 27. 1893." Ordinary copies are bound in red cloth with the same gilt-decorations as here. Dodgson had variants such as these prepared for some of his presentation copies to his friends. On December 12, 1889 Dodgson notes in his diary: "Went to town for the day, to write in about 150 copies of Sylvie and Bruno, which will be published tomorrow" (Diaries 8 [2004] p. 495). James Wilkes (b. 1812) was a surgeon and commissioner in lunacy. Dodgson first consulted him in regards to his Aunt Lucy on April 5, 1880. Williams-Madan-Green-Crutch 217 and 250.
