Provenance : MARY C. COLLINGWOOD (1831-1898) Charles Dodgson's sister (presentation inscription from her brother dated March 29, 1876 on half title); by descent to Stuart Dodgson Collingwood (1870-1937) Charles Dodson's nephew and biographer; C. Lyman (recipient's inscription dated Sept. 15, 1915). FIRST EDITION, A PRESENTATION COPY, BOUND IN BLUE CLOTH AND INSCRIBED BY CARROLL TO HIS SISTER ON THE DAY OF PUBLICATION: "Mary C. Collingwood, with best love, from her affte. Brother, the Author Mar. 29. 1876." March 29th was the day on which Dodgson went to London "to write in 80 presentation copies" which were just ready (Diaries 6 [2001], p.453). Dodgson's own copy, sold at the sale of his books in 1898, was dated 30 March 1876. The exact publication date is uncertain: Dodgson wrote to Macmillan on 17 January 1876 "to advertise Snark to be published on the 1st of April -- Surely this is the fittest day for it to appear" (W-M-G-C p.90). Edward Wakeling, editor of the Lewis Carroll Diaries , and Selwyn Goodacre, Carrollian bibliographer, have previously only located 12 copies bound in blue cloth in their census of Snark editions; this makes the 13th.
