Dominus 1997 Dominus 1997 Napa 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon - the only higher proportion was in 1989, with 89%. It was also the biggest yield ever at Dominus. A real nose of violets, as so often in 1997. Lovely red fruit. Very pretty and attractive. Very elegant. A medium -term keeper. SS. Lot 5263 12 bts (owc, sc) per lot: HKD 10000-13000 per lot: USD 1300-1700 Beside the cult newcomers in Napa, Dominus looks almost venerable, but this great Christian Moueix venture was itself "new" in the Eighties. It is interesting to see how they remain very flexible at Dominus with regard to the grape proportions in the blend. I am sure that Christian Moueix would say that intelligent winemaking is being sensitive to vintage variations - oenological adaptability is the answer. Dominus remains for me the most "Bordelais" of the top California wines. I used to suspect this was auto-suggestion but, at a recent tasting of "cult Californians", Dominus was included as the "benchmark" and it did seem to have a whiff of France about it when tasted next to the Napa babes.
