Law, 1792-1813. 16 volumes in 8, 8° (228 x 135mm). Letterpress titles, half-titles to vols. XV and XVI, errata leaves, indices, 576 HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES. (Occasional light spotting and browning, lacking index to vol. II, tear to final index leaf of vol. XIV.) Uniform contemporary speckled calf, red morocco lettering-pieces (slight cracks to spines and parts of some joints, lightly scuffed). Provenance : Frederick DuCane Godman (armorial bookplate). A rare complete set of the FIRST EDITION of Donovan's extensive work. It was originally intended to appear in ten volumes only, but with the author's acquisition of many further specimens and two important complete cabinets of insects, it was decided to continue the series with a further six volumes in 1806. A 'New Edition' of the work was issued in 1802. This set includes an advertisement leaf for Donovan's The Natural History of British Birds , bound in at the end of volume IX.
