DONOVAN, Edward. The Natural History of British Birds; or a selection of the most rare, beautiful, and interesting birds which inhabit this country...in five volumes . London: for the author and F. & C. Rivington, 1799. 5 volumes in 2, 8° (232 x 135mm.), half-titles, 124 hand-coloured engraved plates (plate 83 detached, outer margin cropped with loss of plate mark). Contemporary diced russia gilt. A reissue of the first 5 volumes of the first edition (which was completed in 10 volumes in 1819) with duplicate titles dated 1799, with the words in five volumes "and as such may be regarded as a separate edition in 5 volumes, the issue of the continuation not having been commenced until ten years had elapsed": (Mullens & Swann p. 174) Nissen IVB 259.
