An exceptionally bright, clean copy of the fourth Oz book. Third state with advertisement on verso of half-title listing six titles beginning with The Emerald City of Oz; colour plates are uncaptioned. In secondary binding with "Reilly & Britton" in upper & lower case at foot of spine and no silver embellishment to the vignette of the Tin Woodman. This book and the Emerald City of Oz are the only Oz books for which John R. Neill created finished watercolor paintings for the color plates, having done line drawings for all the other titles, which were then colored by the printer. Hanff & Greene IV, plate 32.
