(11 13/16 x 9 in.), red half morocco gilt, t.e.g., extremities rubbed, unobtrusive repaired tears to plates 2:13 and 3:5 and to first text leaf in vol. 1, some minor dampstaining and -wrinkling to vols. 1 and 2, occasional offsetting of text to plates, scattered foxing to text (affecting vol. 1 and 2 titles and one portrait) . FIRST EDITION, "THE FIRST COLORED-PLATE SPORTING BOOK PRINTED IN AMERICA" (Henderson), 3 engraved titles, 2 engraved portraits, and 57 mostly lithographed plates after Thomas Doughty and others, of which 54 hand-colored (53 colored lithographs, one colored etching, two uncolored engravings, and one uncolored wood-engraving), 17 text wood engravings, index leaves for the four original parts cut down to size and mounted on recto and verso of a stiff card leaf bound in at end of vol. 3. Originally issued in monthly parts. "Artistically Vol. 1 is much the most important, for it contains the original plates by Thos. Doughty, famous painter and founding-father of the Hudson River School" (Bennett). 31 plates depict American birds. Bennett, p. 35; Henderson, p. 40; Howes D433.
