DOYLE, Arthur Conan, Sir. Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes . New York: Harper & Brothers, 1894. 8 o. Original cloth (some darkening, hinges cracked). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. This issue has the only appearance of "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box" in book form until 1917. Conan Doyle wrote, "there was a certain sex element in The Cardboard Box story and for this reason I discarded it when I published in book form." (See Sotheby's London, 15 July 1999, lot 285). Doyle did not wish to discard the famous opening, though, in which Holmes breaks into Watson's thoughts à la Poe's Dupin. This episode is original to "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box" but was transferred to that of the Resident Patient, resulting in various later duplications. It is unknown why the story was included in the American edition, perhaps Doyle's editors felt the American public was better prepared for lurid subject matter. De Waal 597. [ With ]: Another copy, second issue, without "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box." De Waal 598. -- The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes . New York: Harper & Brothers, 1892. -- Another edition. -- The Hound of the Baskervilles . New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1902. First issue, without "March, 1902, R" on copyright page. -- Another copy, second issue. -- The Return of Sherlock Holmes . New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1905. -- The Valley of Fear . New York: George H. Doran, [1915]. -- His Last Bow . New York: George H. Doran, [1917]. -- The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes . New York: George H. Doran, [1927]. Third issue, with a second issue dust jacket. Together 10 volumes, FIRST AMERICAN EDITIONS, 8 o, original bindings, condition varies. Green & Gibson A14b, A14c, A10b, A26c, A26ci, A29c, A39c, A40c, A46c. (10)
