Half title, half tone frontispiece and 14 plates by Sidney Paget only (of 15, lacks plate opposite p.310, frontispiece detached, a few plates loose). Original red pictorial cloth gilt (lower cover a little damp-affected, corners bumped, spine slightly faded). Provenance : "To Colonel James Hayes-Sadler - a token of friendship - from Adrian Conan Doyle" (inscription on title, beneath laid-down clipped signature of the author on pink paper) -- illegible early signature on half title. FIRST EDITION. De Waal 87; Green & Gibson A26(a). Loosely-inserted is a 3-page letter, dated March 7th, 1945, from Adrian Conan-Doyle, Arthur Conan-Doyle's son, addressed to the recipients of his gift. "Please accept the enclosed first edition of 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' with our love. It is from my father's collection and I have put his signature on the title page." He goes on to describe a 6,500-word treatise he has written entitled 'The True Conan Doyle' (published later in the year) in which he attempts to expose Hesketh Pearson, biographer of his father two years previously, as "a fraud", although he bemoans the lack of a full and proper biography.
