DOYLE, Sir ARTHUR CONAN (1859-1930). Postcard photograph signed ("Arthur Conan Doyle"), by Elliott & Fry (copyright caption from negative), n.p., n.d. [circa 1900]. 139 x 89 mm. (5½ x 3½ in.) including margin. A handsome bust portrait, signed on the lower margin. "British physician, best known for his creation (in 1889) of the indefatigable Sherlock Holmes. Doyle tried to kill his hero off some thirteen years later, only to incur the wrath of Holmes's many admirers - including several members of Parliament. Holmes returned in 1903, and has been around ever since in a variety of literary and cinematic incarnations"--W.M.
