DRÉZE, Gustave. Le Livre d'Or de l'Exposition Universelle et Internationale de 1905. Histoire Complete de l'Exposition de Liège . Liège: Bénard, 1905. 2 volumes, 4 o. Three folding plates, illustrations in text. Original half cloth. PRESENTATION COPY, with printed slips signed by the secretary and president of the executive committee presenting the book to le Baron de Beeckman, "Commissaire pour les Beaux-Arts." The idea of organising an exhibition in Liège was suggested as early as 1892, but various delays meant that planning did not begin until 1897. The site consisted of 52 acres located on the plain of the Vennes, which required the rerouting of the Ourthe River, and the building of a new bridge on the Meuse. The year 1905 coincided with the seventy-fifth anniversary of Belgian independence and the Hall of Machines contained a section solely dedicated to Belgian scientific achievement over the last seventy-five years. Other exhibits included: "Ancient Art in the Country of Liège" which featured brasswork and its practice over eight centuries, "manual labour of women", lace, fine and decorative arts. Of particular interest were the exhibits of bicycles, motorcycles and automobiles. Thirty-three countries participated, of which France, with nearly 8,000 exhibitors, was by far the largest. In addition, there were impressive colonial exhibits: much praise was given to the Japanese, who, despite involvement in the Russo-Japanese war, sent exhibits and won medals. The exhibition attracted some 7 million visitors, and made a small profit. (2)
