Paris: Georges Chamerot for Auguste Fontaine, 1874. 12° (157 x 90 mm). Contemporary green half-morocco, t.e.g. (covers loose). Limited edition of 100 numbered copies, printed after one of the two original manuscripts now in the Arsenal Library. Mistress of Louis XV, the Comtesse Du Barrry conceived the idea to rival the library of her predecessor, the Marquise de Pompadour, and charged an unknown Paris bookdealer to purchase the necessary books. The result of his efforts were 1,091 titles, all of which are mentioned in this listing, together with purchase prices as well as the cost of binding. Lacroix has added a list of books acquired after 1771. The Comtesse died under the guillotine, her library was sold, and Quentin-Bauchard traces only 136 titles surviving from her library.
