DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU, Henri Louis (1700 -1782). Traité de la Fabrique des Manoeuvres pour les Vaisseaux, ou L'Art de la Corderie perfectionné . Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1747. First edition, bound with the royal arms and monogram of king Louis XV. Duhamel du Monceau combined his skills as naval engineer and botanist to produce this thorough work on rope-making, describing the process from plant to its manufacture into rope. As might be expected in a discussion of hemp, he also describes cannabis. Olivier does not reproduce the armorial but does describe this smaller version under 2495, fer 2, as on a copy of this work listed in a Lemallier catalogue of July 1929, no. 2749. Polak 2858. Quarto (252 x 193mm). Title with engraved printer's device after Le Clerc, engraved head-pieces after Soubeyran, historiated initials, 7 folding plates after Basseporte, and two woodcut text illustrations, all illustrating the manufacture of rope, from hempen seed to the elaborate machinery for winding it (scattered light browning, occasional small spot, light stain on C2,3, small hole and light stain in plate 5, minor marginal wormtrack in Pp-Rr). Contemporary French mottled calf gilt with the French royal arms on sides and crowned monogram of Louis in spine compartments (lightly scuffed, corners and spine ends repaired). Provenance : Louis XV, king of France (1710-1774; binding).
